As many of you know, this week is fire safety week.
We were very blessed to have our local fire department visit our school this week.
Our students got to participate in something called a "smoke house". I'm not sure if you're familiar with a smoke house but it is essentially is a fake mobile house where fireman practice with kids on what to do if there's a fire in their house.
The firemen discuss with the kids what they're supposed to do if there's a fire in their house.
The kids then get to enter into the smoke house where they will practice firsthand what to do.
After a brief review, the firemen have the kids pretend like they're sleeping.
The firemen then pushes a button where it fills the house with fake smoke. After it's mostly filled with smoke the fire alarm goes off. The kids must then practice with they've learned. They stay low and they feel the door handle with the back of their hand to see if it's hot. When they realize that the handle is warm and that they cannot exit through the door they all began to exit out of the window on their tummies. They are, of course, assisted by a real fireman who helps them exit the window from the inside and then a fireman who is on the outside of the window who helps them down.
After the smokehouse adventures over, the students all go to the firetruck where firemen will talk to them more. The fireman shows off all of his gear and explains what to look like if he ever has to go in their house to rescue them. The kids love it and they don't realize how much they're learning!
It was rather chilly outside for all of this but the kids loved every minute of it!
